In recent years, Taoyuan has launched the "Aerotropolis" project — a large-scale urban development plan centered on airport expansion and the construction of a new township in the surrounding area. As a result, thousands of households in the region have been subject to land expropriation, forced to give up their homes and farmland. Scattered across the rural landscape adjacent to the airport, over a hundred Earth God temples now face the same fate.
In recent years, some of these temples have been relocated outside the expropriation zone, some have been temporarily moved into other temples for co-worship, and others have undergone a tuishen ("returning the deity to heaven") ritual before being ceremonially dismissed. Fewer than ten temples remain on their original sites, awaiting the final expropriation deadline.
This work takes as its subject the 137 Earth God temples affected by the expropriation. It documents the displacement of these earth deities from the land they have long protected, and reflects on how urban planning — in its grand blueprints and bureaucratic logic — enacts a process of disenchantment upon faith itself.
